EPISODE DESCRIPTION

Eric Galvin has run health plans as both CFO and CEO. At one of them, the directory data was bad enough that regulators raised concerns about whether consumers could find care. When he went looking for the cause, he found all kinds of scary reasons the data is the way it is. Most of them the industry did to itself. Eric spent nine years at ConnectiCare as CFO and then CEO, served as an EVP at EmblemHealth, ran PopHealthCare and Emcara Health as CEO, and was most recently CFO of Geisinger Health Plan. After thirty years on both the payer and provider side, he believes the provider data problem survives for human reasons more than technical ones. It comes down to trust. His prescription for the whole system is one word: simplify.

Key takeaways

30 yearsEric has led on both the payer and provider side, and says the provider data problem is more human than technical.
TrustThe leaders senior enough to fix bad data are often the least free to talk about it openly.
ClearinghouseA shared clearinghouse model, similar to credit reporting, could fix provider data across the industry.
SimplifySimpler products and simpler interactions between plans and providers would do more than upending the whole industry.
“I think there's a lot we could do without completely upending the industry by just simplifying.”

— Eric Galvin, Former CFO, Geisinger Health Plan
